Concrete Countertops & Earthen Floor | Repair & Maintenance After 1 Year | Off-Grid Solar Passive
Doing some maintenance on our concrete countertops, earthen floors, exterior wood door and windowsills. Also a look at the home and it's passive solar design performance.
We finished building our DIY off-grid passive solar design home in November of 2022. This was a DIY build, we are not professional builders, just sharing our experience living and building off the grid in the Arizona desert.

    Coat the aircrete surface with brushable plaster/Paint slurry: Mix up a bit of white cement, water and sodium silicate (2% by weight), Highly reflective (High SRI) and very durable.

    I dry sand it... Not an aggressive sanding, just basically polishing with 400 grit 3M. Wet sanding at that stage of the cure is guaranteed to leave noticeable streaking and swirling in the surface. That may be desirable depending on the look you're going for

    Amazing that you're controlling the thickness by eye. I've seen tile setters lay a mortar bed by setting a 1x3 metal ground to trowel up to. Have you ever thought of making your own earthen floor tile?

    if you dont shake the jug of foaming agent it dose not get mixed up so the first couple of batches are great then it gets really bad from there, imho that your result came from not have shaking up the bonding agent jug at all or enough as this is a very common and very avoidable mistake sorry i could not of told you sooner hope you get a chance to try it again like i have showed you God bless

    You all are amazing! So MUCH, so well done, and in such little time! Have you researched using biochar for soil improvement? I'm in SV, west of you, and have noticed more vigorous plant growth and veg production in the test beds i applied it to last year. Plan to apply to my fruit trees and grapes this year. Looking into producing my own. Great channel!

    I thought your video was not too bad... But unfortunately there's a small detail are you overlooked... Aircrete is not meant to be foundation... The strength lies in the shape that it has distribution of the walls and the rebar you are missing a lot of rebar

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid 22 дні тому

      It was going to be well supported, with a metal frame and other reinforcements. We thought about using it for the floor, but definitely not for the foundation. We were testing the material itself and our ability to make consistent batches. The long term durability seemed too questionable.

    Very curious what exact tongue oil you were using, what wax, and what polishing stone grit? (I have to redo mine, the concrete countertop solutions products I used are not holding up). Thank you!

    • @RedandAprilOff-Grid
      @RedandAprilOff-Grid 29 днів тому

      The stoning was done before the concrete was fully cured, and again when applying the first coat of tung oil. For the stoning, he used a basic knife sharpening stone from Harbor Freight. He used "Real Milk Paint" Pure Tung Oil mixed with 1/4 citrus solvent. The wax we used is Howard food grade wax with beeswax, carnauba wax, and mineral oil. It's a soft wax that doesn't harden. The first 4 minutes of our most recent video shows some maintenance to the countertop. ua-cam.com/video/crNzm6RHRWQ/v-deo.htmlsi=MlrqwKPb42Fo3Tgd Best wishes! 🙂

    Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot. Your idea of bare concrete interior and dirt floors is cheap, but I would get tired of it. What you call the industrial look is the prison cell look for me. Industrial for me is 10x this size. Sunlight from the windows will eventually get overwhelming. Sunglasses in the living room? I like wood and shaded windows, so I would opt for a solarium on the south side to harvest heat in winter.

      Glad it was helpful! Hope you find a style you like better while still incorporating some passive solar design elements. Passive solar is amazing. It makes for such a comfortable home. After living in the house for over 1.5 years now, we wouldn't change a thing. We don't need to use any fuel for heating, and it has comfortable and even temperatures year round. I love natural lighting. The sun shining through the windows in the winter hasn't been an issue at all. I wouldn't want it shining directly in my face, but that's not usually a problem because the sun shines in at a downward angle. It's also easy to close the curtain if needed. The sun feels fantastic when it warms my lap on a cold winter morning. The floor feels great on the feet, and I love the texture and color variations, but I get that it's not for everyone. Best wishes 🌞
